Three Film Noir Poster Analysis
This Gun For Hire
Genre: Film Noir | Drama | Thriller | Mystery|Crime Layout & Representation Of Women: The woman in the poster is represented as a powerful character because she takes most of the space in the poster. She is very big compared to the man who is very little compared to her this shows dominance and supremacy of the female character over the male. The woman is higher than the man, this could also mean she is more powerful. Colours, Images & Art Work: The poster is very colourful, I thought it would be black and white because black and white is a basic convention of Film Noir. The text is in red and the connotations of red are danger and blood. The artwork used has a very cartoony effect. The woman's face is very bright and the man's face is quite shadowed, the connotations of shadows are mystery and suspense. Hard and soft lighting have been used effectively to create glows and shadows. For example it looks like the female character has cast a shadow over the male protagonist and it looks like she is luring him into the darkness into danger, mystery, and secrecy. Lettering & Font: The lettering of the title is all in capital letters with a bold font. The actors names are also very bold, most of the writing such as the title and cast names are in red and the connotations of red are danger and blood. |
Pickup
Genre: Film Noir|Drama Layout & Representation Of Women: The representation of women in this poster promotes women as sexual objects as the woman is the main focus of the poster, smoking and showing lots of cleavage. The woman is quite bright with red lips, golden hair and her body position is slanted. There is also a man and woman in the background really close together as if they are about to kiss, it may be the same woman who is the centre focus above it is a quote saying"~but you won't~ if you know what's good for you!" this could be saying that the woman is not good for you. Colours, Images & Art Work: The title and the tagline are a similar colour orange/red and the connotations for red are danger and blood. The artwork makes the woman look like she has a bright outline around her body this draws more attention to her and her body. Lettering & Font: The title and the tagline are big, bold and the same font. They are also a similar colour orange/red and the connotations for red are danger and blood. |
ChinaTown
Genre: Film Noir|Thriller|Mystery|Crime|Drama Layout & Representation Of Women: The layout in this poster represents the women as powerful character as her face is bigger and brighter than the protagonist. Her face fills up most of the poster also her face was shot at an extreme close up so it also attracts more attention, it is the first thing you look at when you see the poster. Colours, Images & Art Work: The images make the man look quite mysterious because of the hat that is covering his face and the black clothing, the connotations for black are mystery, death and evil. This suggests that the man could be evil. The poster is surrounded with a smoke from the man cigarette, it also makes up the women's hair and the connotations of smoke are mysterious, hidden and secretive. This could mean the man and women are hidden (hiding from someone). Lettering & Font: The lettering and font of the title and cast names are in the same font, size and colour this make it look uniform/as one. The lettering is in black and connotations of black are evil, darkness, danger and death. |
